ENGINEERING SURVEYS IN THE GARADAGH & SHAMKIR DISTRICTS

Engineering surveys, geodetic and topographic surveys, installation of reference points, CAD & GIS mapping

The scope of surveys consisted of carrying out engineering prospecting works in the territory of the Norm cement plant and in the raw material areas, where mining operations were carried out. Conducting topographical surveys, installing geodetic reference points (benchmarks) in the fields, and processing the results in software complexes were the raised issues. To achieve the main goal, modern geodetic equipments and GIS/CAD software were used. It also includes creating triangulation network models and 3D modeling, as well as other  necessary issues. All the works carried out within the framework of the engineering prospecting works were planned according to the technical task.

The engineering geodetic and topographic surveys covered a total area of 3 ha in Garadagh district of Baku city, 20 ha in Sangargaya area, 6 ha in Vulkan area of Garadagh district, and 1 ha in Alabashli village of Shamkir district. Geodetic reference points were installed during the engineering surveys on the raw material deposits, and the coordinates and elevation indicators of those points were determined. Digital topographic maps, triangulation network models and 3D models were created for each area, as well as relief profiles.

The resolved issues on the engineering prospecting works:

  1. Performing of engineering prospecting works (engineering geodesy and topography surveys) in the territory of the Norm cement plant and on the raw material deposits.
  2. Creation of CAD-based digital topographic maps.
  3. Creation of GIS-based triangulation network models and 3D models on the raw material deposits.
  4. Installation of geodetic reference points, determination of coordinates and elevation indicators of the points.
  5. Preparation of transverse and longitudinal relief profiles based on triangulation network models.

In order to carry out engineering prospecting works (Geodesy and topography surveys), the investigation areas were initially analyzed based on high-resolution satellite images and the methodology was selected according to the relief. A risk assessment was carried out following HSE procedures and topographers were instructed. Favorable weather conditions were chosen to start work and all equipments was tested before visiting the investigation area. In accordance with the methodology, an RTK mode geodetic measurement system was applied for the purpose of conducting topography surveys in the field. In the next level, during topographic surveys in the area, the area was visually inspected and the points where the station should be installed were analyzed in order to maintain the connection between the GPS base station and the GPS receiver. It should be noted that the optimal location for the station was selected, geodetic reference points were installed in the areas, and the coordinates and elevation indicators of those points were determined.  Elevation indicator and optimal location criteria of the station were provided the accurate conduct of topographical surveys on the territory and the connection of measurement results to geodetic reference points.
