DETERMINATION (REMOTE SENSING) OF OIL CONTAMINATED AREAS

Based on the signed bilateral agreement, team of the company determined the oil-contaminated areas of Baku city using aerospace methods (remote sensing methods). We then calculated the areas of these contaminated sites using modern techniques. The team obtained high-resolution satellite images and created orthophotos for those areas. We generated NDWI (Normalized Difference Water Index) and ENDVI (Enhanced Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) maps from the images. Using remote sensing methods, they classified the degree of contamination in the areas. We then created classification maps of oil-contaminated areas for the contract areas. The team resolved the issues using the geographical information system and established a geodatabase of oil-contaminated areas.

Remote sensing is the acquisition of information about an object or phenomenon without making physical contact with the object, in contrast to in situ or on-site observation. The term is applied especially to acquiring information about Earth and other planets. RS is used in numerous fields, including geophysics, geography, land surveying and most Earth science disciplines. It also has military, intelligence, commercial, economic, planning, and humanitarian applications, among others.

In current usage, people generally use the term RS to refer to the use of satellite or aircraft-based sensor technologies to detect and classify objects on Earth. It includes the surface and the atmosphere and oceans, based on propagated signals (e.g. electromagnetic radiation). Generally, it can split into “active” remote sensing and “passive” remote sensing.
